NEW YORK – This Sunday marks the 15th anniversary of the attacks on September 11, 2001. The Coast Guard remains committed to secure more than 95,000 miles of shoreline and nearly 3.4 million square miles of Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZ).
America’s ports and waterways are safer and more secure than they were 15 years ago. We have recovered from the worst terrorist attacks ever on our soil, and have made progress on every front to protect ourselves.
Each year members of the Sector Long Island Sound conduct 1,180 patrols to ensure protection of critical infrastructure, like bridges and navigable channels. In average 215 waterfront facilities are inspected by maritime professionals to verify compliance with security and safety law and regulations. In addition, 291 foreign vessels are being screened and vetted to guarantee safety of the American ports. We are standing vigilant watch alongside our federal and state partners defending 450 miles of New York and Connecticut coastline against all terrorist threats.
As we look back and remember the day that changed our nation forever, we also choose to look forward. The dedicated men and women of the Department of Homeland Security will continue to work with honor and integrity to safeguard the American people, our homeland, and our values.
