UPDATE: Coast Guard continues search for missing man near Halona Blowhole

HONOLULU — The Coast Guard continues to search for one of two men swept out to sea near Halona Blowhole Lookout, Sunday.

Involved in the search are a 45-foot Response Boat-Medium crew from Coast Guard Station Honolulu, an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Air Station Barbers Point, the crew of Coast Guard Cutter Kittiwake, an 87-foot coastal patrol boat homeported in Honolulu.

Also assisting are a rescue boat, dive team and helicopter crew from Honolulu Fire Department as well as a jet ski crew from Ocean Safety.  An MH-60R Navy helicopter crew from Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron 37 also assisted in the search.

Divers from HFD recovered one of the missing men unresponsive Sunday morning. The second man has yet to be located.

"Our condolences go out to the family of the man recovered unresponsive," said Petty Officer 1st Class Tyler Peterson, operations search and rescue planner at Sector Honolulu Command Center. "We are saturating the search area with responders to maximize our chances of locating the second man." 

Watchstanders at the Coast Guard Sector Honolulu Command Center received notification from the Honolulu Fire Department at 5:07 p.m. Saturday of the situation. The two men were last seen at approximately 5 p.m.

On-scene weather conditions are 15 mph winds and 4-foot seas.

The Coast Guard urges the public to use extreme caution with the onset of high surf impacting the Hawaiian Islands this weekend. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration issued a high surf advisory for all south facing shores through Monday morning.

The public is advised to monitor weather and ocean conditions through local television, radio and internet before heading out and be aware that weather conditions can quickly change.
