Update #5: CONTINUA RESPUESTA AL ENCALLAMIENTO DEL CARIBBEAN FANTASY Y COMIENZA BUSQUEDA DE MASCOTAS A BORDO

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – Personal de evaluación de incendios y daño estructural subieron a bordo del ferri Caribbean Fantasy el jueves en la tarde para determinar el estado del incendio, la condición del interior de la embarcación y buscar a los dos perros que se presume permanecen abordo.

Durante la búsqueda, el personal no encontró ni escuchó a las mascotas, por lo cual se coordinará una segunda búsqueda durante la mañana del viernes.

Se reportó que el incendio pudiera estar contenido principalmente en el cuarto de maquinas de la embarcación.  Aún queda corroborar el nivel y actividad de incendio que continúa a bordo.

“Estaremos realizando una segunda búsqueda durante la mañana para tratar de encontrar a las dos mascotas,” dijo el Capitán de Navِِío Robert Warren, Comandante a cargo del incidente de la Guardia Costera de los Estados Unidos. “El comando unificado se encuentra activamente coordinando y trabajando junto a todo el personal participando de la respuesta para atender todos los asuntos relacionados con el encallamiento del Caribbean Fantasy.  Estamos trabajando de la manera más rápida y segura para poder liberar está embarcación tan pronto sea posible.  Durante el proceso, buscaremos proteger y causar el menor impacto al ambiente sensitivo que la rodea.”

El Comando Unificado para la respuesta del Caribbean Fantasy está compuesto de la Guardia Costera de los Estados Unidos, la Agencia de Protección Ambiental de los Estados Unidos, La Junta de Calidad Ambiental de Puerto Rico, el Departamento de Recursos Ambientales de Puerto Rico y Baja Ferries, dueños del Caribbean Fantasy.

También participando en la respuesta se encuentran American Cruise Ferries, Ardent Global, contratista de salvamento; el Departamento de Pesca y Vida Silvestre de los Estados Unidos, la Administración Nacional Oceánica y Atmosférica, Witt O’Brien’s, la Agencia Estatal para el Manejo de Emergencia y Desastres, el Cuerpo de Bomberos y la Autoridad de Puertos de Puerto Rico.
