PHOTO RELEASE: Coast Guard Art Program is honored at the Salmagundi Club

NEW YORK –Adm. Charles Michel, Vice Commandant of the Coast Guard, accepted 26 pieces of artwork on behalf of the Coast Guard Art Program (COGAP), during a ceremony held at the Salmagundi Club in New York City, July 5, 2016.

 

Adm. Michel was invited to view and jury 26 pieces of art in the collection and present the George Gray Award for outstanding artistic achievement.

 

The 2016 collection includes the work of 24 different artists. The entire COGAP collection contains nearly 2,000 works, most of which are paintings.

 

For the past 35 years, COGAP has used fine art to educate audiences throughout the country about the roles and missions of the U.S. Coast Guard.

 

The program has connected professional artists who volunteer their time to allow COGAP to fulfill its mission. COGAP is a partnership between the Coast Guard and the Salmagundi Club, a New York City artistic and cultural center.

 

The artwork often depicts heroes and significant moments in the Coast Guard’s history. Many of the pieces are exhibited at museums, libraries and patriotic events.  Some of the artwork is also displayed in the offices of Congressional members, senior government officials and military offices, and at Coast Guard locations nationwide.

 

The exhibition is free and open to the public. It can be seen Monday through Friday from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., until July 15. The Salmagundi Club is located at 47 Fifth Avenue in New York City.
