Coast Guard seeks owner of kayak found adrift near New Smyrna Beach

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Coast Guard is seeking the public’s assistance Saturday in identifying the owner of a red and yellow kayak found approximately 30 feet from New Smyrna Beach.

Coast Guard Sector Jacksonville Command Center watchstanders received notification of the kayak from a good Samaritan at approximately 2 p.m. A search was initiated for a possible kayaker in distress.

Coast Guard Station Ponce de Leon boat crews aboard a 45-foot Response Boat–Medium and a 24-foot Rescue Boat, and an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Air Station Clearwater are searching for a possible missing kayaker.

There have been no reports of missing persons in the area.

New Smyrna Beach Patrol, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and Volusia County Sheriff’s Office crews also searched.
