Coast Guard seeks input for Miami Main Channel waterway assessment

MIAMI — The U.S. Coast Guard is seeking public input Thursday on the use of the Miami Main Channel through the jetties.

The focused Waterway Analysis and Management System survey seeks input from industry personnel, and recreational and commercial boaters on the use of the maritime navigational system through Government Cut, leading to the Miami Main Channel.

The survey is open to the public until Nov. 20 and is located at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/MiamiMainChannel.

The input from this focused WAMS survey assists the captain of the port during her assessment to ensure the overall effective and safe navigation of the Miami Main Channel.

Coast Guard officials use WAMS surveys to assess existing aids to navigation systems, to get a better understanding of the uses of each waterway and to identify general safety issues. WAMS focuses on the waterway's current navigational system, marine casualty information, port and harbor resources, and possible changes in recreational and commercial vessel use and development projects.

Navigation aids are one portion of a larger maritime navigation system. The status of the navigation system and other information vital to the mariners are available in the Local Notice to Mariners. The Coast Guard advises all mariners to become familiar with and use the local notice to mariners, light lists and nautical charts to remain up to date on changes and discrepancies to navigational aids.  Any questions or concerns regarding the maritime navigation system should be directed to the nearest captain of the port.
