Coast Guard helps 2 fishermen to safety near Texas-Louisiana border

LAKE CHARLES, La. — A Coast Guard boat crew assisted two men to shore after their boat became disabled Tuesday morning nearly 2 miles southwest of Holly Beach, which is about 10 miles west of the mouth of Lake Calcasieu.

Around 9 a.m., the captain of the 21-foot bay boat contacted the Cameron Parish Sheriff’s Department with his mobile phone, reporting that his boat's engine fell off and that he was using dewatering pumps to keep up with the incoming water.

The Sheriff's Office notified the Coast Guard and Sector Houston-Galveston watchstanders launched a Station Lake Charles 29-foot boat crew to assist them.

The boat crew arrived at 10:33 a.m. and found the engine was about 6 feet underwater and only connected by the cables going to it. Due to safety concerns towing in that condition, the cables attaching the engine to the sinking boat were severed, releasing the engine.

The men and their boat were delivered safely back to Cameron boat ramp at about 2 p.m.
