Coast Guard assists in rescue of man in Lake Michigan near Michigan City, Ind.

MILWAUKEE – The U.S. Coast Guard, the Washington Park Lifeguard Team and LaPorte County emergency medical services rescued a 17-year-old male in Lake Michgian near Michigan City, Indiana, Sunday.

The man’s name and hometown are not being released and there is no Coast Guard imagery available.

At approximately 3 p.m. CDT, Coast Guard Station Michigan City received a report from LaPorte County 911 dispatch of a person in the water off of Washington Park Beach. The man was reported to have been swept off the rocks into the lake and was struggling.

The 45-foot response boat from Coast Guard Station Michigan City was underway in the area and quickly diverted, arriving on scene within 2 minutes.

The Coast Guard boat arrived on scene and found members of the Washington Park Lifeguard Team performing lifesaving measures on the man.

The patient and the lifeguards were brought onboard the Coast Guard rescue boat where members of the crew assisted with lifesaving efforts on the way to Coast Guard Station Michigan City, where LaPorte County EMS personnel were waiting.

The patient was taken by EMS to Franciscan St Anthony Health, and was last reported to be alive in critical condition.

“Our motto in the Coast Guard is Always Ready, and the crew from Michigan City was just that,” said Cmdr. Leanne Lusk, the Coast Guard’s search and rescue coordinator for this case.

“Their ability to act quickly and decisively with local lifesaving personnel certainly contributed to the outcome of this case.”

The Coast Guard reminds all beachgoers to please take caution when near the water. Lake Michigan has had an increased number of hazardous beach conditions, such as rip currents, large waves and high winds, in the last few weeks.

“If you or your family are going to spend time near or on the water, please take note of the current weather forecast and all posted watches and warnings,” said Lusk.
